Chippewa County Felony Court Records

Felony cases in Chippewa County go through the 8th Judicial District Court. Under Minnesota Statute 609.02, a felony is any crime that can result in one year or more in state prison. Drug charges, assault, burglary, and theft are common filings. Each case produces a file with the complaint, bail order, plea documents, and sentencing order.

Court records are public under Section 13.82 of the Data Practices Act. Juvenile records, sealed files, and active investigation data are exceptions. Once charges are filed and the case goes through the court, anyone can ask to review the documents. You do not have to be involved in the case. Felony case files are kept for 50 years under Section 138.17. Murder records are permanent. Old cases from Chippewa County can still be found at the courthouse.

The BCA also maintains criminal history data under Section 13.87. Public conviction data stays available for 15 years after the sentence ends. After that, the data becomes private in the BCA system. But the court records at the courthouse are still available for the full 50-year retention period. So if you need an older record, the courthouse is the better option. You can ask the clerk in Montevideo to pull the file for you.
