The 9th Judicial District Court in Walker handles all felony cases for Cass County. A felony is defined by Minnesota Statute 609.02 as any crime punishable by one year or more in prison. Drug offenses, assault, theft, and burglary are common charges. Each filing creates a case file with the criminal complaint, bail order, and sentencing documents.

These records are public under the Data Practices Act (Section 13.82). Juvenile cases, sealed records, and active investigations are exceptions. Once a case goes through the court system, anyone can ask to review the file. You do not have to be a party to the case. Under Section 138.17, felony files are kept for 50 years. Murder records stay on file permanently.

Criminal history data at the BCA level is governed by Section 13.87. Public conviction records stay available for 15 years after the sentence is done. After that, they become private in the BCA system. Court records at the Cass County courthouse, however, remain open for the full 50-year period. If you need an older felony record, the courthouse in Walker is the place to go.

Note: Cases involving tribal jurisdiction may not appear in the state court system. Contact the Leech Lake Tribal Court if you think the case was handled there.
