Common felony charges here include drug manufacturing and distribution, assault, burglary, and weapons violations. Each case creates a full record.

Investigation data stays restricted under Statute 13.82. The DOC offender locator tracks people under state corrections supervision from any Minnesota county, including Itasca.

Because Itasca County is so large, the court handles cases from many different communities spread across the county. Probation records and supervised release conditions are all part of the case file. If someone on probation for an Itasca County felony violates their terms, the violation creates new records in the same case. The court in Grand Rapids keeps all of this on file for the full retention period. Older records may be on paper, while recent ones are in the electronic system.

Note: Itasca County's large area means cases may involve multiple law enforcement agencies, including tribal police and the state patrol.

Expungement in Itasca County

The Clean Slate Act allows automatic sealing of eligible felony records five years after a sentence ends. The BCA handles the review. Violent felonies and sex offenses with registration requirements are excluded.

Under Statute 609A.015, the BCA checks each Itasca County felony record to determine if it qualifies for automatic sealing. The review looks at the crime type and whether the person picked up new convictions. Sealed records no longer show on the public BCA search or MCRO. Law enforcement agencies still have access. The court in Grand Rapids keeps the original case file on record even after sealing. If automatic sealing does not apply, a petition through the court is the other option.
